At CR Smiles – Meridian Dental Care, we offer compassion and respect for each of our patients. We want you to know that it’s alright to feel anxious about your appointment – dental anxiety is quite common. Our goal, however, is to show you that there’s no reason to. We will make your dental experience as comfortable and stress free as possible. We offer headphones, televisions, massage chairs, and blankets during your treatment to help you relax and keep the atmosphere in our office calm and friendly. For our patients who like a little more comforting, we offer several sedation dentistry options at our Meridian practice, including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.
Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Contrary to popular belief, most dental sedatives do not put you to sleep during your procedure but rather help you remain relaxed. They may make you feel sleepy but you remain awake throughout your treatment so you can respond to the dentist. You probably won’t remember much about your procedure once the sedation wears off after a few hours. Sedation dentistry can benefit patients who may have neglected dental care for years due to fear or anxiety, as well as those who just want to have a relaxing dental experience.
Coping with Dental Phobia
Some patients may experience fear or anxiety when visiting the dentist which can prevent them from seeking the dental care they need, sometimes for years. For these patients, sedation can be a great help. We can perform any dental procedure while a patient is under sedation, from general dentistry procedures to complex restorative dentistry procedures.
Combining Multiple Procedures into One Visit
Another benefit to sedation is that it allows us to combine several procedures, such as in the case of a smile makeover, into one office visit. For the patient, it can make a procedure that takes several hours feel like only a few minutes and can reduce the number of dental appointments that are required to meet their needs.
Our Sedation Services
We offer two of the most common sedation dentistry methods at our practice in Meridian:
Oral Conscious Sedation
For oral conscious sedation, you will be given a sedative pill to take about an hour before your appointment. Since the sedative will start to take effect before your appointment, you will need to have someone drive you to and from our dental office. You will arrive at your appointment feeling drowsy. To begin your treatment, we will administer a dental anesthetic if needed to further minimize any discomfort during your procedure.
Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen that is inhaled by a patient during a procedure to help him or her relax. Nitrous oxide works within seconds and wears off almost immediately once the gas is no longer being inhaled, so you can safely drive yourself home after your procedure. The amount of nitrous oxide can be adjusted to fit each patient’s needs. In most cases, a topical dental anesthetic will be administered to the treatment area to further minimize pain and discomfort during your procedure.
